Mayor John King has a vision- he would like to purchase the Bavery building
south of the Rocket Tap and make it a visitor's center. King wants to capitalize
on the Emiquon Preserve, Dickson Mounds and the Illinois River Road
which has helped to renew and increase Lewistown's economic tourism.
IDOT has released funds for an ITEP grant that the Mayor is applying for
that would be used to help renovate the building to become a visitors center.
The center would be operating for the primary purpose of the interpretation
or commemoration of the scenic byway. Lewistown is a Portal community
along the Illinois River Road (National Scenic Byway). In addition to the
interpretation of the byway, the center would also have information on Dickson
Mounds Museum, Emiquon, and the history of Lewistown.
In the event that the City is not awarded the grant, Mayor King is still planning to
see his vision come to life. "We are still going to make a visitors center, even if
we don't receive the grant" said Mayor King. The grant deadline is August 31, 2010.
